Amon Amarth est un groupe de death mélodique suédois fondé en 1992 à Tumba. Le groupe est souvent cité comme faisant partie du mouvement Viking metal. Le nom du groupe signifie Montagne du Destin en sindarin, langue inventée par J. R. R. Tolkien.

Style musical [modifier]

Amon Amarth aborde surtout des thèmes reliés aux Vikings et à la mythologie scandinave. Le groupe se décrit d'abord comme étant un groupe de death metal plutôt mélodique. Cependant, plusieurs classifient ce groupe comme étant du viking metal.

Biographie [modifier]

Formé en 1988 sous le nom de Scum à Tumba en Suède, le groupe prit son nom actuel en 1992, avec le lancement de plusieurs démos, dont le notable The Arrival of the Fimbul Winter. Ce n'est toutefois qu'en 1998 que les quatre vikings (cinq par la suite) sortiront leur véritable premier album Once Sent From The Golden Hall. Plusieurs albums qui connurent de plus en plus de succès sortirent coup sur coup en 1999, 2001, 2002 et 2004. La particularité de la musique est aussi présente sur des titres comme "Under the Northern Star" où la voix puissante de Johan Hegg se mêle à une mélodie très douce sachant donner à la musique un réel pouvoir évocatoire.

Leur dernier album sorti en 2008 s'intitule Twilight of the Thunder God. On peut noter chez Amon Amarth une réelle sensibilité artistique dans les textes écrits par Johan Hegg, faisant référence selon ses dires à des expériences personnelles. On trouve sur ce dernier opus plusieurs collaborations notamment avec le guitariste Roope Latvala (de Children Of Bodom) qui vient proposé un solo sur l'un des titres du groupe, mais également, une collaborations plus surprenantes avec les 4 violoncelles d'Apocalyptica sur le titre "Live for the Kill" où l'on ne peut que constater le talent d'Amon Amarth à mêler puissance, changement de rythme, interlude et retour en force.
